Bravely Default 2 is coming to Nintendo Switch on February 26th, and is the highly anticipated direct sequel to Bravely Default. This game is famous for its incredible soundtrack, compelling story, interesting characters, and unique combat mechanics, all of which are likely to make a return in the sequel. This new trailer explains that unique combat system in great detail.

Bravely Default 2’s combat works the same way as the original’s, with players able to use the brave command to take multiple turns at once. While this can be beneficial in bursting damage, it leaves the character open for a counterattack. Alternatively, they can default to take a defensive stance, reducing the incoming damage they receive and saving their action for the next turn. This is represented by the number of a brave points (BP) a character has, with each brave action costing a BP and each default rewarding one. When used properly, it will allow players to overcome difficult boss battles, but if misused it can also mean certain death.
The trailer starts off showing how most beginners play the game, simply spamming the brave command and killing enemies in one turn. Since the player characters generally go first, giving each party members four attacks is usually enough to defeat a regular enemy. This approach quickly starts to fail once the player is facing off against difficult bosses from the military nation of Holograd, as the default command becomes necessary to survive certain attacks. The whole trailer functions both as a great way to teach newcomers about the system while also poking fun at veterans in a hilarious way.
With Bravely Default 2 just on the horizon, this type of refresher is actually somewhat useful to longtime fans. It’s been a while since most have gotten their hands on a game from this franchise, as even the most recent title, Bravely Second, is over five years old now. With the release date drawing so near, fans should expect to see a launch trailer coming soon.
